Raw & Unfiltered Honey

We take extra care of our hives by monitoring the bees, cleaning the hive, and making sure they get enough food & water so that our bees are healthy and your honey is tasty.

Hi, We’re The Bowdoins!

There are 6 of us.

Chantel, Brad, Allie, Adrian, AJ, and Annika.

We currently have 3 apiaries, and about as many bees as we can keep up with. It can be hard work, tending to the bees, giving them food, water, and doing their cleaning. But we wouldn’t trade it for the world! Every time we visit our apiaries to check on them, or spin the frames, or cap the Wax, it’s just another fun adventure. And we love it.

So, believe us when we say that everything you see in our honey, and in your jar, came off our frames, from the hard work we put in to deliver tasty honey right to your front door.

Our Honey

Most honey on a store shelf has been through more processing than you’d guess.

It gets heated so it pours easily. It gets filtered fine enough to stay clear on a shelf for an entire year. And a good bit of what made it honey in the first place ends up sitting in a filter somewhere.

Then there’s the other thing nobody advertises. Plenty of honey sold under one label is blended from several sources, including some that never saw a Texas flower.

Ours is blended too, but only from our own three apiaries in San Antonio, La Vernia, and Blanco. Different country, different flowers, and surely a different taste. Nothing else but pure honey is inside our delicious bottles.

We’ll admit. The honey gets cloudy sometimes. It firms up in Winter. Sometimes it tastes like whatever was blooming across those three places that season. But that’s why the Spring jar and the Fall jar aren’t the same. They aren’t supposed to be.

Taste it once. You’ll notice a difference.

How We Make Our Honey

There’s no factory in this story. Here’s every single thing that happens between the hive and your kitchen.

1

Pulled by hand

Frames come off the hive one at a time, only when they’re capped and ready.

2

Spun, not squeezed

A hand-powered centrifuge pulls the honey off the comb. No heat, no pressure, and definitely no machinery.

3

Strained at room temperature

We strain it just enough to take out bits of wax and hive material. Nothing fine enough to strip the pollen.

4

Left to rest

It sits a couple of days so anything left over floats to the top on its own.

5

Bottled from the bottom

We draw from the bottom of the tank, which is where the clean honey is.

That’s it. No pasteurizing, no fine filtering, no additives, no gross chemicals, and nothing bought in from somewhere else. What the bees made is what you get.

Nothing goes to waste.

Beeswax is slow, expensive work for a colony to produce, so we don’t throw any of it out. We clean every batch by hand, strain it through a clean t-shirt until the impurities stay behind in the cloth, and turn what’s left into things worth keeping around the house.

Bee & Swarm Removal

If Bees have made their home in your home, we’ll take em’.

First thing worth knowing. If what you’re looking at is a tight cluster hanging off a branch, a fence post, or a piece of equipment, that’s a swarm. It’s a colony in transit, resting while scouts look for a permanent home. No honey to guard and no brood to protect, which makes them about as calm as bees ever are.

That’s a good time to call, because swarms move on within a day or two.

If it’s a steady stream going in and out of the same hole every day, that’s an established colony. They’ve built comb, they’ve got something to defend, and they aren’t leaving on their own.

We handle both, as long as we can reach them without taking your house apart. Trees, fences, sheds, yards, vehicles, and equipment are all fair game.

Suited up, collected, and relocated to one of our apiaries. Nothing gets sprayed, and the Bees are safe.

Every job is different, so pricing is by quote. Send a few details and a photo, and you’ll hear back.

For Texas Landowners

Bees can help your acreage qualify for a 1-d-1 open-space valuation.

Texas recognizes beekeeping as a qualifying agricultural use. If you’ve got open acreage that isn’t doing anything for you at tax time, hives are one of the lowest-effort ways to put it to work.

We handle all of it. We audit your land, bring the hives, and place them. Then, for an annual fee, we come out and maintain them all year. You don’t need to buy any equipment, you don’t need to suit up, and you don’t need to learn to spot a queen.

Acreage minimums and hive counts are set by your county appraisal district, and they vary. So for the first conversation, just tell us where the land is and how much of it there is, and we’ll tell you whether it’s worth pursuing. If it isn’t, we’ll say so.

Come See the Bees

We offer classes, apiary tours, and of course… honey!

Bees are more interesting up close than anybody expects, and most people have never stood next to an open hive.

We host hands-on classes and apiary tours, and we’ll come talk to your school, business, or community group about bees, pollinators, and the day-to-day as a beekeeper.

From the Apiary

A few things people ask us all the time.

Why did my honey turn solid?

It crystallized, which is what raw honey does, and faster than processed honey because it’s had less done to it. Use it as-is, or set the sealed jar in warm water and it goes right back to liquid.

Are swarming bees dangerous?

Usually the opposite. A swarm has no hive to protect, so they’re about as docile as bees get. The colony living in your wall is the one that gets defensive.

Isn’t a bee removal free? You get the bees.

That’s the assumption. Plenty of relocated colonies don’t stay in the new box, and sometimes the whole job ends with a beekeeper who spent an afternoon and got nothing. The bees can’t be the payment.
